The Cayo Perico Heist was added to GTA Online in December 2020 and immediately became — and has remained — the best money-making method in the game. You infiltrate the private island compound of drug lord Juan Strickler (El Rubio) to steal his primary target, plus whatever secondary loot you can carry out.
What makes it exceptional is the combination of three factors: it can be completed entirely solo, it has a relatively short cycle time of around 48 minutes, and the payout scales with skill and preparation — meaning the better you get, the more you earn per hour. A beginner clearing Cayo in 65 minutes earns around $900K/hr. An experienced player who knows the drainage tunnel route and does clean runs in 35 minutes pushes well above $1.5M/hr.
The primary target is randomly assigned each scope run and directly determines your payout ceiling. The Panther Statue (event only) pays $1.9M. The Pink Diamond pays $1.43M. Below that, Bearer Bonds and Ruby Necklace are both solid. If you get Tequila or Cash as primary, it's still worth running — the hourly rate stays competitive.
Scope out the island (15 min) → complete prep missions (20 min) → run the finale (8–15 min) → 48-min cooldown → repeat. During the cooldown, sell Nightclub stock, run an Agency contract, or just queue the next scope. Never sit idle.
Every Cayo Perico run starts with a scope mission. You fly to the island on a seaplane and photograph key points of interest. What you photograph determines what's available in your prep and finale. Never rush this — a thorough scope run saves more time than it costs.
Main Compound Gate and Primary Target are the only two required photographs. Everything else is optional but strongly recommended for faster runs.
- Primary Target — always photograph it. This confirms your payout ceiling before you commit to prep.
- Drainage Tunnel entrance — on the south side of the compound. This is your fastest entry point. Photograph it every run.
- Secondary loot locations — photograph all of them. Gold, cocaine, and weed are all worth carrying. Cash is last resort.
- Bolt cutters — look for them around the island during scope. You need them for the drainage tunnel approach. Photograph their location.
- Guard patrol patterns — observe them during scope. The fewer guards you memorise, the less likely you are to get spotted in the finale.
- El Rubio's safe — check the artwork on the office wall during scope. If the safe code is visible, you won't need the fingerprint cloner prep.
- Grappling hook location — needed if you don't have bolt cutters. Photograph it as a backup.
Prep missions are optional but each one makes the finale faster or easier. For a minimum-time run, you only need the approach vehicle and one entry tool. For a maximum-efficiency run, do them all.
Cayo Perico has three distinct entry points, each with a different risk/speed profile. For grinding, drainage tunnel stealth is the clear winner — but it's worth knowing all three.
Your total take is the primary target value plus whatever secondary loot you fill your bag with. Aim for gold as secondary loot — it has the best value-to-bag-space ratio of everything available on the island.

Here's how a maximised 2-hour Cayo session looks for an experienced player running the drainage tunnel route with the Pink Diamond as primary target.
💰 Calculate Your Exact Session Income
Enter your session hours and active businesses into the Money Calculator to see your real projected earnings including passive income stacking.
- Always select Hard Mode — it gives a flat 10% payout bonus. There is no additional difficulty. It's free money. Go to the planning board, scroll to the difficulty option, select Hard.
- Don't buy supplies for prep missions — every prep mission for Cayo Perico can be completed for free by doing the mission itself. Buying supplies wastes money and offers no time benefit for this heist.
- The 48-minute cooldown is your biggest time sink — plan every session so you're doing something productive during it. Nightclub sale, Bunker resupply, Agency contracts. Never just wait.
- Re-scope between every run — the primary target can change between sessions. Always check before committing to a prep cycle so you don't do 20 minutes of prep for a $632K cash target.
- Fill your secondary loot bag with gold only — if gold is present in the compound, take it exclusively. At $333K per stack, it fills your bag value significantly. Ignore cash entirely.
- The drainage tunnel gate is always in the same location — south wall of the compound, below the cliff line. Once you memorise the route from the beach landing to the tunnel, you'll never need to think about it again.
- Kill the two guards near the drainage tunnel before entering — there are usually 2 guards patrolling near the tunnel exit inside the compound. Take them out silently before grabbing loot so they don't surprise you on the way out.
- Use the Kosatka's fast travel if you've unlocked it — it teleports you anywhere on the map for $10K. Useful for quickly returning to your Kosatka after the finale to start the next cycle immediately.
- The primary target spawns in one of four locations — the drainage compound vault, the office, the communications room, or the storage building. Learn all four so you can retrieve it quickly regardless of where it spawns.
- Don't grab El Rubio's safe unless it's on your route — the safe is in his office and pays $50–100K extra. Only take a detour for it if the office is on your path to the primary target, otherwise it's not worth the extra time.
